Features PureVPN

PureVPN is an older VPN provider from 2007 that has been considerably renewed in recent years. The company has its headquarters in Hong Kong and has more than 2000 servers distributed in more than 140 countries. In the past, the service was known as expensive, but due to the renewal of the company, the price dropped considerably.

The software is available on multiple platforms and is also easy to use. In this review you can read extensively what this service offers, what the pros and cons are. If you don’t know what you can do with a VPN, you can read our page about what a VPN is . We share our experiences with this affordable VPN service.

PureVPN servers

Since this provider has been around for a while, they have built up a large server park. At the moment there are more than 2000 servers in more than 140 countries. A total of 180 server locations are available within these countries. This is really a very extensive network. Everywhere in the world there is a server nearby and you can therefore use a VPN connection relatively quickly.

Dedicated IP address

If you want to access a server within your home network from a different IP address, the most logical solution is a dedicated IP address. PureVPN offers the option of having your own IP address used at an additional cost. Another situation where this can be useful is when you can only access certain websites with pre-approved ip addresses, for example you can think of access to an ftp server.

Use PureVPN software and apps

Software is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android . The software on all platforms is very easy to use. For beginners it is immediately clear what is possible, it is not a complicated interface. In addition, there is also plenty to choose for the more demanding user, all conceivable settings for a VPN connection can be found within the software and the apps. The download of the different software can be found on the website itself.

We think the Windows app is very intuitive and easy. The appearance of the app is not very modern but it is clear and it does exactly what it should do. Below you can see some screenshots of the Windows software from PureVPN.

PureVPN home screen, choose the application

As you can see, you can choose between different profiles or modes. Each profile is suitable for a special purpose. For example, you can choose “stream”, “security / privacy”, “file sharing” and some other goals for which you want to set up the VPN connection. If you have chosen a mode, your settings will be adjusted accordingly. For example, a less secure protocol is chosen for streaming that is faster than, for example, OpenVPN .

Once the correct profile has been selected, you will see a new screen as shown below. Here you can choose a location that you want to connect to. You can also perform a ping test in the same interface so that you know which VPN server is probably the fastest in your situation. You can also immediately see on which servers it is allowed to download p2p such as torrents. Select a country with which you want to connect and the software will connect to the chosen VPN server.

Once connected you will see the following screen. This is just a status screen and you have the option to disconnect if you want.

There is of course also a settings menu available on the app. Here you can indicate, among other things, which protocol you want to use. For this review we have carefully examined all options and there is really enough to set if you want. The settings screen has several chapters under which you can set specific settings

Furthermore, there is the settings menu where you can adjust the necessary. Nothing is as useful and clear as you ask us. There is a settings menu for Onze, a kind of antivirus and blocking service from PureVPN. These settings are all difficult to understand and if you already understand them it is a job that must be done with surgical precision. Other settings such as “automatically starting when Windows starts” and automatically connecting when starting PureVPN are useful. As well as the settings for the kill switch.

But PureVPN also works great for people who don’t want to set anything. The default settings are good and sufficient for the average user of the service.

As you can see there are many options with the Windows software. Don’t be shocked by this, the standard options are good for the average user. But when you want to set some extra, it is easy to do with this software. This is always a plus for VPN services when we make a review.

Also on Android you have the choice to use different profiles. This automatically sets certain settings for you so that you get the best user experience according to your purpose for the VPN connection.

Connection has been made

Connecting to a VPN server is literally done with 1 tap on the button.

PureVPN settings on Android

Also on Android there is enough to set manually. For example, it is possible to configure that you automatically connect to a VPN server as soon as you start the app and you can also choose which VPN protocol you want to use. The average user does not have to set this at all, the default settings are fine.

All in all, the Android app from PureVPN worked great during our review period.

iOS app for iPhone and iPad

Also for those who have an iPad and / or iPhone, an app has been developed with which you can connect to a PureVPN server. The app works even better than the Android app if possible. There are more options available and this app also looks great. When you are looking for an affordable VPN provider to use on your iPad or iPhone, you can handle PureVPN and the iOS well.

For example, you can indicate the purpose of your VPN connection and the app indicates which server is most suitable for that. For example, you can indicate that you want to stream, the iOS app then indicates which servers are the most suitable.

Below you see a screenshot with an overview of a number of options that you will find in the app. You also get an impression of how the app works.

Browser extensions Chrome and Firefox

If you only want to surf safely and anonymously , you can choose to install only the browser extension or addon in Firefox and Chrome from PureVPN. With this you can easily connect to a VPN server in the browser.

This ensures that all internet traffic in the browser in question goes via a VPN connection. Keep in mind that the other traffic is sent unencrypted via for example messengers or download programs. If you want to encrypt all your data it is therefore important that you use the full desktop client of PureVPN.

The browser extensions look like this, the screenshots are taken in Chrome but in Firefox it looks the same.

This is how the main screen looks in the Chrome extension. A big advantage of this extension is that you can set to prevent WebRTC leak.

And from the extension you can easily visit websites that you can unblock with the PureVPN VPN connection.

PureVPN Kodi addon

PureVPN has also  made an addon especially for Kodi and Openelec. With this you can set up a VPN connection within Kodi in a clear and easy way. The advantage of this is that you can now see geographically blocked streams in Kodi. In addition, many Kodi users want to protect their privacy. A VPN connection is of course also a very suitable option for this.

PureVPN has developed an application for the Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS distributions. This application is console based, you must use the software in the terminal. This is all very easy but the options are more limited than the options in the Windows and MacOS software.

Other operating systems

Because PureVPN supports the well-known OpenVPN protocol, it is easy to connect to other devices and other operating systems. For example, you can use this service with Ubuntu or other Linux devices. Even if you have a DD-WRT or Tomato router, for example, you can still use PureVPN.

An advantage of installing PureVPN connections on your router is that it is possible that devices that do not normally support VPN can still connect to the internet via a VPN. Consider for example a Chromecast and Apple TV. This makes it possible to watch geographically blocked content with these devices. For example to the NPO and RTL XL app from abroad .

Privacy and security PureVPN

Like all VPN services that take themselves seriously, PureVPN supports the following protocols:

  • PPTP
  • L2TP
  • OpenVPN
  • IKEv2

In order to use a VPN service as safely as possible  , we always recommend choosing OpenVPN and at least avoiding PPTP. PureVPN is also one of the few to have the option to use SSTP, this is the most secure method but it noticeably slows down your internet traffic. The technical security of PureVPN is therefore good!

The privacy policy of PureVPN gets insufficient from us. We are not a fan of logs at all and PureVPN says it has limited logs. Within the privacy policy of PureVPN we have found that it is not logged which sites you visit, which requests you send to the DNS server, which mails you send and so on. What is being logged are the attempts to connect to the VPN server. According to PureVPN this is only done for security reasons and to keep track of the technical performance of the service.

But a recent event tells us that the partial logging of information can cause you to lose your privacy. Or the following means that PureVPN secretly logs. The FBI was able to pick up a person with the help of the logs of PureVPN. This shows that your privacy at PureVPN is not completely secure.

Automatic connection and kill switch

If you want to be sure that you only connect to the internet if a VPN connection has been established, it is important that your VPN software automatically connects and blocks the internet if there is no connection to the VPN server. The automatic connection option and kill switch option respectively are responsible for this. This is an essential matter if a constant VPN is necessary, in this review we look at how PureVPN does that.

PureVPN has automatic start-up and automatic connection option built into the software for Windows and Mac (OS X) users. The apps for iOS (Iphone, Ipad) and Android do not have this option. The option is also much less important for these apps because these devices are constantly on, so you only need to connect to the Purevpn server once to stay connected to Android and iOS.

Having a connection is nice, but keeping a connection is at least as important. Then a kill switch appears. This is an option that disables all internet traffic when the connection to a VPN server is lost. This option is only available on Windows systems, the website states that work is being done to get the functionality up and running on other platforms, it is not yet known when that will happen.

PureVPN speed

PureVPN loads what stitches fall in speed. It seems as if the VPN servers from PureVPN are often overloaded or simply pinch your connection speed at a certain pressure. Our internet speed halved after we switched on the VPN connection with PureVPN. Of course you can always switch from server, but that did not solve the slow connection in all cases.

When you are looking for speed in a VPN connection, you are not in the right place with PureVPN. If speed is important denotes at IPVanish or ExpressVPN much better. The slow connection with the VPN servers is really a downside in this PureVPN review.

Bittorrent and PureVPN

PureVPN allows the use of the bittorrent protocol over its network, but there is a small comment about this policy. You are required to use a server that is located in a country where PureVPN allows downloading with bittorrent. Fortunately, these are many countries, even if you are connected to the English VPN server from PureVPN, you can download torrents. This is a good way to download anonymously .

By the way, you will not be punished if, for example, you try to download torrents if you use the server in the United States, downloading torrents will simply not work.

Price of PureVPN

PureVPN has a price structure that you often see with VPN providers. The longer the subscription that you take in one go, the lower the monthly costs. If you immediately take out 1 year and pay, the subscription costs $ 2.92 per month. If you compare that with the most expensive VPN service in our review overview: ExpressVPN , it saves around $ 3.30 a month. If you do not want to pay a year in advance immediately, then PureVPN becomes a bit more expensive. If you want to pay per month you lose $ 9.60 per month, which is quite high. Another option is to purchase a 3-month subscription, this will cost you a converted $ 7.01 per month.

In our view, price-wise the only attractive option is an annual subscription. The other 2 subscriptions are really too expensive for what you get. For example, if you only need a VPN for 1 month, you better go to Private Internet Access .

Below you can see a screenshot of the price table that comes from the PureVPN website.

All in all, the price of a PureVPN annual subscription is average. The service works fine in itself, as far as that goes, the price / quality ratio is OK. But as stated earlier, we are very shocked at the way in which PureVPN apparently deals with customer data. A  cheaper VPN with better quality and better privacy is CyberGhost .

Money back guarantee period of 31 days

It is possible to test the service for the first 31 days. If the test period is not satisfactory, it is possible to request a refund within 31 days. PureVPN indicates that this is easy to do. To get your money back from PureVPN you send an email. This email contains your user name and the reason why you do not want to continue with PureVPN. Then they will cancel your subscription.

Watch Netflix with PureVPN

PureVPN claims that you can watch the French, British and American Netflix with a connection to one of these countries. However, we tested it and Netflix streaming never worked. So this seems to be a false promise.

We understand that not all servers work with Netflix, since Netflix actively tries to block VPN connections. But if you claim that Netflix works, we at least expect PureVPN to do everything it can to get Netflix back to work over VPN connections.

Conclusion, our experience with PureVPN

PureVPN is very cheap and offers more than sufficient quality in return. The speed can occasionally leave something to the wishes, but luckily there are usually other servers to connect to that are fast enough.

The software we used during the review is clear, the Windows software is a bit more extensive than for the other platforms. The encryption used for the connections is basically good in NordVPN. However, when you are looking for a VPN to protect your privacy, it seems that you should choose a different VPN service. A case is known that PureVPN has consulted customer data with government agencies. This is very bad if you ask us.

The customer service and support leaves something to be desired. For example, there are stories that people did not get a refund after the trial period when they asked for it.

Our experience with PureVPN during this review can therefore be described as reasonably positive, certainly if a low price is important to you. But the way in which PureVPN deals with customer data turns out not to be good. In our eyes, this is a major disadvantage of this service and we therefore advise against this VPN service.
